What is cold process saponification?
Cold process saponification is a chemical reaction that occurs when vegetable oils are mixed with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH). This reaction produces soap and glycerin.
Why do we choose cold process saponification?
More natural soaps: Cold process saponification preserves the natural properties of vegetable oils, such as their vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
More nourishing soaps: Cold process soaps are richer in glycerin, a natural humectant that helps hydrate the skin.
More environmentally friendly soaps: The cold process saponification process does not require heat or harsh chemicals, making it a more sustainable process.
The steps to create our soaps:
Oil selection: We carefully select high-quality vegetable oils, such as olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and almond oil.
Lye preparation: Sodium or potassium hydroxide is mixed with water carefully, as this mixture can be exothermic.
Mixing the oils and lye: The lye and oils are slowly poured into a container while stirring constantly until the mixture reaches a thick and creamy texture.
Adding essential oils and other ingredients: At this point, essential oils can be added to give the soap aroma and therapeutic properties, as well as other ingredients such as clay or honey.
Pouring and curing: The mixture is poured into molds and left to cure for 4-6 weeks. During this time, the soap hardens and loses moisture.
Cutting and packaging: Once the soap is cured, it is cut into bars and packaged in recyclable or compostable materials.
